Is the Skin on Your Head Really the Same as Your Face?
Ever noticed a nick from shaving your head bleeds far more than one from shaving your face, and still hasn't quite settled down a week later? Turns out there's a real reason for that. Scalp skin and facial skin are both skin, but they're not built the same, and once you look at what's actually underneath, it explains a lot.
Same materials, different foundations
Peel back facial skin and you'll find fat pads and the muscles that let you frown, squint and smile, sitting close under the surface across the whole face. Peel back scalp skin, at least across the crown, and there's barely anything there. A thin layer of fat, then a tough, tendon-like sheet called the galea aponeurotica, then skull.
That sheet only connects to actual muscle at the front and back of the head, the muscles that raise your eyebrows and move your scalp slightly at the back. Across the top, it's just skin sitting on a sliding layer, sitting on bone. No cushioning, no give.
The oiliness myth
Worth clearing up while we're here: the scalp isn't the oiliest skin on your body. The forehead is. Both sit at the very top of the sebaceous gland density chart, packed with more oil glands per square centimetre than almost anywhere else, but research puts the forehead marginally ahead. If your head feels oilier than your face, it's probably hair trapping oil against the skin, not the skin producing more of it.
Why a nick on your head is a bigger deal
Here's the part that actually changed how we think about this. Scalp wounds bleed more because of how the blood vessels sit in that tough layer under the skin. They're held open by dense connective tissue instead of being free to constrict the way facial vessels can, and the scalp has more of them cross-connected to each other. Cut one and it can bleed from both directions.
The instinct is to assume good blood supply means fast healing. That's not the whole story. That same tendon-like sheet, the galea, doesn't stretch. As a wound tries to heal, the galea pulls it back toward its original shape, which can starve the healing edges of blood rather than help them. It's why surgeons sometimes have to deliberately score the galea on larger scalp wounds to take the tension off. A shaving nick is nowhere near that scale, but the same mechanism is working against it in miniature.
So a nick on your head isn't just more dramatic to look at. It bleeds more, and it's working against tougher odds while it closes.
And they happen more often
There's a simpler reason head shaving catches more nicks too: you can't see most of what you're doing. A face gets shaved in a mirror, straight on, in full view. The back and sides of a head get shaved by feel, around a curved surface with its own bumps and contours, which makes it much harder to hold one consistent angle all the way round.
What we're not going to claim
We looked into whether a head nick actually hurts more than a face nick too, expecting an easy yes. The evidence doesn't cooperate. Some sensory research actually suggests the scalp is less sensitive to pain and temperature than facial skin, despite being full of nerve endings. Nobody's tested it specifically on razor nicks, so we're leaving that one open rather than making something up to fit the story.
Where this leaves the shaving bit
